The Crown star Emma Corrin has revealed she was admitted to hospital after shooting a gruelling scene in a freezing cold swimming pool.
The 24-year-old actress, who plays Princess Diana in the Netflix show, was hospitalised with low oxygen levels after spending hours in the icy water.
Medics then wouldn’t let Emma, who is asthmatic, fly home after they assessed her condition.
“I’m asthmatic and had been ill for a while with a cough,” Emma told GLAMOUR UK.
“I had to film a scene in a freezing-cold swimming pool. It was the hardest scene to film because I was genuinely keeping myself alive treading water.
“We were meant to be flying back that night to the UK and went past a hospital to get antibitotics.
“The doctors gave me an oxygen test and test and said ‘we can’t let you go because your oxygen levels are so low’, so I was hospitalised.
“I remember the nurses figuring out what I was filming and saying ‘would you like us to put a cardboard box over your heard so nobody recognises you.”
The actress previously revealed asked The Crown ’s writing team to add extra details about the royal’s battle with bulimia into the script.
She was so keen to ensure the critical issue was included she made the personal request.
Emma can relate to the pressure Diana felt to be thin and glamorous at all times and the star knows how important it is to tell the whole story.
“I felt that if we were trying to depict bulimia in an honest way, we had to show it,“ she said.
“Otherwise it’s a disservice to anyone who has been through that. Diana was very candid about her experience, I so admire that.
“I don’t buy that anyone has a healthy relationship with food. These days there’s so much pressure, especially with social media, to be a certain way.”
Emma was not even two when Diana died in a car crash on August 31, 1997.
