Actor Raymond G Allen Senior has died aged 91 from respiratory issues. He was best known for his role as Uncle Woody in the US TV show Sanford And Son

Sanford And Son actor Raymond G Allen Senior has died aged 91.

The telly star, best known for his role as Uncle Woody in the US TV show Sanford And Son, died after being found “unresponsive” on Monday morning at a care facility in California, according to TMZ.com.

His daughter, Ta-Ronce Allen, confirmed the news on her Facebook page, writing: “What a day this is been. I am so surrounded by love from friends and family.

“This has been one of the hardest days of my life I lost my father Raymond Allen and my cousin Deborah Doll [his niece].

“They are now both being held by the wings of angels.”

The star’s family confirmed that his death was not related to COVID-19 but Raymond had been suffering from a number of ‘respiratory issues.’

Emergency services were called to the scene to try and revive Raymond, but sadly, he had already passed away by the time they arrived.

The Sandford and Son star had been ill for many years before his loved ones decided it was time to enter him into the health care facility in 2016.

Raymond shot to fame in 1972 when he appeared on Sandford and Son which was based upon a a grumpy father Fred G. Sanford who worked in a junk yard in California.

The show was an instant hit with viewers across the United States and has the years passed, it was considered to be one of the most ground breaking shows in the country.

The actor gained a fantastic reputation for being a talented TV star and later went on to appear in popular shows such as Wino on Good Times and The Jeffersons.

Raymond has survived by his beloved former wife Barbara Williams who he was married to from 1963 to 1977.

Raymond and Barbara also welcomed three children together throughout their marriage.
