Two actors have died and six other crew members have been injured, after a van carrying crew from Netflix show The Chosen One was involved in a severe car crash.
It’s been reported that actors Raymundo Garduno Cruz and Juan Francisco Gonzalez Aguilar both died from the injuries sustained in the turn-over crash in Baja California Sur peninsula, according to the Baja California Department of Culture in Mexico.
Local media reports the crash occurred Thursday June 16, and claim the van flipped after running off the road in a desert area.
Hollywood Reporter report that the crew apparently been working in the nearby Santa Rosalia area at the time of the crash.
The Chosen One had been shooting close to the scene of the crash earlier this week
The Chosen One is an adaptation of a comic book series American Jesus, originally published as Chosen, created by Mark Millar.
The show reportedly began filming in Mexico in April, with Everardo Gout and Leopoldo Gout working as co-showrunners on the series.
Steaming giant Netflix describes the series as: “A 12-year-old boy learns he’s the returned Jesus Christ, destined to save humankind. Based on the comic book series by Mark Millar and Peter Gross.”
Juan Francisco González is reportedly one of the actors who lost his life in the crash
Raymundo Garduño is also said to have died following the incident on Thursday
A further synopsis for the show released earlier this year reads: “Multilingual (Spanish/English) series American Jesus follows a twelve-year-old boy who suddenly discovers he’s returned as Jesus Christ.
“He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk, and, perhaps, even raise the dead! How will he deal with the destiny to lead the world in a conflict thousands of years in the making?”
First released in 2004 under the name of Chosen, the Millarworld comic The Chosen One TV series adapts was later re-released under the titled, American Jesus.

The comic was penned by Mark Millar, with Peter Gross providing the illustrations.
Following Millarworld’s other titles Jupiter’s Legacy and Super Crooks release on Netflix, The Chosen One was set to become the third adaption inspired by the company book company.
Sharing an update about production in May, Mark said: “The development for American Jesus is coming along beautifully in the talented and capable hands of Everardo Gout and Leopoldo Gout.
“I’m blown away by the creative choices that Netflix has allowed us, and particularly since this series will feature Spanish and English dialogue.”
Everardo – best known for 2021 movie The Forever Purge and Netflix series Luke Cage – was signed on to direct the series, alongside acting as a co-showrunner.
Reporting in April, What’s On Netflix gave some details about what to expect from the upcoming series – including descriptions of two main characters, Jodie and his mother, Sarah.
The Mirror has approached Netflix for comment, although the show is said to be filmed by an independent production company.
“Jodie is described as ‘a seemingly normal teenager until a freak accident makes him think otherwise. He is not pathologically shy, but introverted. He is also a great storyteller, a trait he uses to entertain his friends’,” the website wrote earlier this year.
“Sarah is described as ‘a beautiful and brave woman. She is Jodie’s mother and she protects him a lot, although she doesn’t know what she is protecting him from’.”
The release date for the series had not been confirmed prior to the crash.
The Chosen One is also the name of another show available on the streaming platform – a Portuguese series that currently has two series available to watch on Netflix.
Following the news of the crash breaking on social media, singer and dancer Porscha Coleman was one of the many Twitter users to post about the tragedy.
“This is terrible news,” the star wrote.
“As a fellow actor, my heart goes out to those injured and killed while filming on location. You never want to hear something like this happen when people are just doing what they love #thechosenone #netflix #mexico.”
