Twisted fate Hugh Grant would have given Notting Hill characters in dark sequel

Notting Hill actor Hugh Grant opened up about his thoughts on romantic comedies and what he would like to see happen in a sequel of the classic with Julia Roberts

Hugh Grant has revealed how he would have seen a Notting Hill sequel play out – and it’s not the prettiest of endings.

The 60-year-old actor opened up about his history of romantic comedies, specifically his role as William Thatcher in Richard Curtis’ 1999 classic Notting Hill.

But while William and Julia Roberts’ character Anna Scott fell in love and had children, Hugh has revealed the turn he thought the film should have had.

Speaking in an interview with Collider, Hugh admitted that he thinks relationships of his characters have ‘all been a disaster’, and that “those films are all lies.”

He said: “I’m sure that my character in Notting Hill and Julia Roberts’ character have been through the ugliest imaginable divorce with really expensive, nasty lawyers.”

He also took part in a Q&A with HBO’s Twitter account, where he said he would like to film a sequel which follows the divorce.

Hugh said the film would be based on “children involved in tug of love, floods of tears, psychologically scarred forever”.

Not exactly the Notting Hill sequel that any of its super fans would hope for but one Hugh said he’d “love to do.”

The 1999 classic has returned to Netflix UK recently pleasing many viewers, but hopefully Grant’s idea for a sequel wouldn’t be lodged in the forefront of their minds.

For those of you that haven’t seen the classic, the synopsis reads: “A chance encounter over spilled orange juice leads to a kiss that blossoms into a full-blown affair.

“As the average bloke and glamorous movie star draw closer and closer together, they struggle to reconcile their radically different lifestyles in the name of love.”

Hugh is currently starring in a HBO series alongside Nicole Kidman called The Undoing.

The pair play husband and wife Jonathan and Grace Fraser, whose lives are upended when secrets and lies following a violent death threaten to change everything.
