This Morning ‘s travel expert Simon Calder has opened up about the shocking abuse he’s received from viewers.

The travel pundit, 64, explained he was hit with vile hate comments after telling fans of the show how they can enjoy a getaway during the coronavirus pandemic.

His advice was bombarded with more than 100 Ofcom complaints.

The travel guru was told to “f**k off and stay in England” after suggesting viewers could visit mid-Wales as areas of south and north Wales are under local lockdown restrictions.

Also Simon said he was branded “an absolute f***ing knob” and “a maggot” in response to his travel tips.

The telly star wrote in his column for The Independent this week about the vile abuse he received.

He explained he didn’t mind criticism but he had never “encountered such intense abuse as my well-intentioned remarks triggered this week”.

Simon wrote: “And goodness, when I nominated Machynlleth, Aberystwyth and all stations to Pwllheli as an autumn break in Wales did people want to heckle.”

He continued to call out the haters: “‘Worm!”’ emailed Kenneth Pedrick of Cardigan. ‘Why, in God’s name, are you sending the English (unbidden by anyone but you) out to the west coast of Wales to infect us with the virus when it’s just about the only place in Britain left uninfected, you maggot?’ He was one of the more polite commentators.”

He concluded: “Dion Humphreys from Porthmadog wrote: ‘Absolutely f***ing knob there’s a reason parts of Wales are going in to lockdown, we don’t want you lot bringing more cases to Wales. Now f*** off and stay in England.'”

Others celebrities who have been targeted by trolls include Stacey Solomon and her boyfriend Joe Swash.

It was a sweet surprise trip from Joe for Stacey celebrating her 31st birthday, and they took the kids along.

They were falsely accused of “flouting lockdown rules” by Welsh locals on their trip.

But Welsh locals were less than impressed at the family holiday while many parts of the country are in lockdown to stop the spread of coronavirus.

“So the question here is…. will they be fined for this?” one furious fan asked.

Another quizzed: “As the government states you will be if travelling during lockdown… or is it a different rule for celebrities?????”

However the loved-up pair were not breaking any rules.
