The Matrix director Lilly Wachowski has confirmed The Matrix is actually a story about the transgender experience.

The revolutionary sci-fi film, released in 1999, spawned two sequels and has a third sequel in development.

It followed the adventures of Neo ( Keanu Reeves ) as he discovered the world he inhabited was not real and was a virtual construction, meaning his life was a lie.

The original trilogy was directed by Lilly and her sister Lana Wachowski before either of them came out as trans.

Lana came out as trans in 2010, followed by Lilly in 2016.

Speaking in a new video for Netflix, Lilly said of the film’s trans themes: “That was the original intention but the world wasn’t quite ready.”

However, fans have already pointed out how the film acts as an allegory for the trans experience.

“I’m glad that it has gotten out,” said Lilly, adding that she is glad it has such “meaning” for the trans community.

The director also elaborated on the writing process of the film with her sister Lana at the time.

Lilly explained: “I don’t know how present my transness was in the background of my brain as we were writing it… especially for me and Lana, we were existing in this space where the words didn’t exist so we were always living in a world of imagination.”

A fourth film is now in development and will see Keanu Reeves reprise his heroic role as the messianic Neo, while Carrie-Ann Moss will return after her role as Trinity in the original trilogy.

Jada Pinkett-Smith will also be back after playing Niobe in the previous films.

Meanwhile, new cast members in the film series include Neil Patrick Harris, Hamilton actor Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra, and Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who some speculate will play a young Morpheus – who was played by Laurence Fishburne in the original trilogy.

Lana Wachowski will return as the sole director of the fourth film, but sister Lilly will not be involved due to her work on the Showtime series Work In Progress.

The Matrix 4 is scheduled for release on April 1, 2022.
