Suzanne Shaw’s 20-year battle with anti-depressants after not wanting to ‘wake up’
Former Hear’Say singer Suzanne Shaw has bravely opened up about her struggles with mental health and alcohol abuse as she admits to taking anti-depressants for over twenty years
Suzanne Shaw has bravely revealed that she has been taking anti-depressants for over twenty years.
The former Hear’Say singer, 38, has detailed her ongoing battle with mental health and admitted that some days, she did not want to ‘wake up’ at all.
After reaching the top tier of stardom alongside her former band mates including Kym Marsh and Mylenne Klass, Suzanne began to spiral out of control.
The former pop star admitted that she would do her best to numb her mental health struggles with excess booze and non-stop partying.
The toxic cycle of self-destruction caused Suzanne immense mental and emotional anguish until she realised that she needed to help herself.
Opening up about her demons to OK! Magazine, the star explained: “Every time I drank, it was taking a massive toll on my depression, my thoughts were getting darker and darker and I needed to help myself.
“I’d be like, ‘Ugh, not another day, I can’t do this.’ I’d put the duvet over my head and I wanted it all to just go away. I’m on antidepressants and have been for 20 years. I came off them during my pregnancies but went back on them when I had postnatal depression twice.”
The proud mum-of-two added that she was ‘sent over the edge’ after her friends sold humiliating stories about her during the height of her successful music career.
Despite regularly feeling that she didn’t want to ‘wake up’, Suzanne insisted that she knew she would never take her own life because of her children and her responsibilities.
After realising that her boozy lifestyle was no longer sustainable, Suzanne has decided to turn her life around by ditching alcohol once and for all.
Over the past six months, the blonde beauty has also adapted a vegan diet which has done wonders for not only her physical health but also her mental mindset.
Suzanne now takes time out of her busy schedule to maintain a self-care routine which she had neglected for almost two decades.
The singing sensation makes sure to exercise daily in order to get the endorphins pumping throughout her body, which have been proven to boost positive emotions – and she admitted that she has never felt better.
Suzanne insisted: “I wanted to do everything I could to fix my head. Since doing that, my skin is so much better, my weight has dropped off, I’ve lost over a stone and I feel incredible.”
Suzanne shot to fame in 2001 after she was chosen to join Popstars band Hear’Say.
The group, who were signed to Polydor Records, originally consisted of Danny Foster, Myleene Klass, Kym Marsh, Suzanne Shaw, and Noel Sullivan.
