LGBT Awards: Emotional Phillip Schofield on ‘making the jump’
TV presenter and comedian Sue Perkins will become the latest celebrity to host the 2022 British LGBT Awards later this month.
The former Bake Off presenter, 52, will follow in the footsteps of big names such as Mel B, Alan Carr and Kelly Osbourne in hosting the star-studded bash on June 24.
Celebrities and organisations with a track record of promoting LGBT+ rights will be honoured at the glitzy showbiz event, with nominees including global icon Lady Gaga, Rylan, Steps, Olly Alexander and Jurgen Klopp.
Doctor Who actress Jodie Whittaker, Formula One star Lewis Hamilton, Harry Potter legend Daniel Radcliffe and former Little Mix singer Jade Thirlwall are also up for one of the organisation’s coveted awards.

Speaking ahead of hosting the red-carpet extravaganza, presenter Sue said: “I am very excited to be hosting the 2022 British LGBT Awards.
“This is one of the year’s most important celebrations of the LGBT+ community and I’m delighted to be involved. It is always such a great event, shining a light on role models and those who advance the rights of LGBT+ people in Britain and across the world.
She added: “This event always attracts the biggest names, and this year will be no exception. I’m honoured to be a part of it. It is going to be a blast!”

Billy Porter, Michaela Jae Rodriguez and Indya Moore and are all in the running for the Celebrity of the Year award alongside The Crown star Emma Corrin, while multiple Grammy and BRIT Award-winning artist Dua Lipa, non-binary singer-songwriter Sam Smith, British rapper Lady Leshurr and pop icons Steps will battle it out for the MTV-sponsored Music Artist of the Year gong.
The British LGBT Awards have been host to some huge celebrity moments over the years – including an emotional Philip Schofield breaking down in tears last year as he collected his first LGBT Award after coming out in 2020.
The This Morning presenter fought back the tears as he collected his award via video link
The star-studded bash was also where comedian John Bishop made a moving speech about his gay son in 2018.
As the Scouse star collected his honour for Ally of the Year, the dad-of-three discussed life with wife Melanie and sons Joe, Luke and Daniel.
He said: “I was so pleased to be nominated.
“I brought my whole family, my wife and my three sons who I love and I am massively proud of.

“Like all parents we have problems with them.
“One of my sons has a tattoo on his ankle that was meant to be Africa but looks like Australia, one of my sons mumbles and one of my sons is a gay man.
“I’ll be honest, there’s been loads of nights when me and my wife have sat up and worried and worried and worried.
“What are we going to do if he doesn’t stop mumbling?”
John went on to advocate for more LGBT+ rights across the world as he received a standing ovation from the crowd.
