Sherlock star Martin Freeman has embarked on a new romance with a woman decades younger than him – according to reports.

The 49-year-old TV star is said to have fallen for French actress, and budding screenwriter, Rachel Mariam – who is aged 28-years-old.

Martin and Rachel have been spied out and about near the British star’s London home – and signals he may have moved on following the collapse of his romance to actress Amanda Abbington in 2016.

Earlier this month, Rachel shared a selfie of herself with Martin on Instagram from a screening of Sky Arts documentary Long Hot Summers, just two days before the current lockdown kicked off.

The Sun on Sunday has reported the romance, and claims a source said: “It’s still early days but they are getting on really well.

“They have spent quite a bit of time together at his home in North London because of Covid, but Rachel was able to meet some of his friends before lockdown.

“They both love the same films and Martin supports her acting and writing career.”

Martin and ex-partner Amanda were together from 2000 to 2016 and have two children together – a son named Joe and a daughter named Grace.

Back in 2018, Amanda opened up about her struggle to cope with the collapse of the relationship.

The 46-year-old told Red Magazine at the time: “I had thought Martin was the love of my life. This wasn’t meant to happen to us.

“I would wake every morning with a sudden lurch. ‘Why do I feel sick?’ I’d ask myself, in the darkness of the bedroom I no longer shared with my partner.

“And then, a split-second later, I’d remember what had happened. ‘Oh,’ I thought, as the tears started to fall. ‘That’s why’.”

She continued: “It was one of the darkest moments of my life but, although I didn’t know it then, it was also to mark the beginning of an extraordinary journey of self-discovery.

“It’s still hard. I still have massive wobbles but that’s understandable, I think.”

She added, at the time: ”We still love each other – even if we’re not in love with each other – and neither of us sees our relationship as a failure.
