Kate Garraway was hailed as “amazing” by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during the Pride of Britain Awards on Sunday.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter was praised for her resilience as husband Derek Draper continued his battle with Covid-19.

The touching exchange happened in a pre-recorded segment in which Kate joined the royals to honour the NHS.

The former I’m A Celebrity campmate thanked Prince William and Kate Middleton for joining her in saying thanks to the health service, with the Duchess replying: “I think you’re amazing to do this – you’ve had such a hard time yourself. How are you all doing?”

The GMB host replied: “We are doing okay – it’s very difficult, you can’t visit.

“The children still haven’t been able to visit. I think that is a huge pressure for everybody.”

The 38-year-old Prince added: “It’s been very difficult for a lot of people.”

Kate replied: “You’ve had it in your own family as well!”

William admitted: “Yeah, my father had it very early on.”

Prince Charles reportedly contracted Covid-19 at the same time that Kate’s husband Derek was struck down by the potentially fatal virus, on March 30.

Kate revealed on Friday that her husband managed to say his first word since coming out of coma, though it was heartbreaking as he whispered the word “pain” as she watched on FaceTime.

During the Pride of Britain broadcast, Kate said about the NHS: “There is no doubt the NHS has saved Derek’s life. You can never find enough words to say thank you!”

Viewers were quick to share their pride for Kate and how she has proved to be an “inspiration” during the pandemic.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “After watching a very emotional @PrideOfBritain I think we all want to pay tribute to everyone who has dealt with #covid it has been an incredible hard year. I to as @susannareid100 says want to praise & send my [heart emoji] to @kategarraway who as been an angel supporting Derek like this.”

Another added: “@kategarraway what an extraordinary woman x”

While a third wrote: “Kate is a lot of peoples inspiration.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge awarded the NHS with a Special Recognition Award.

William said: “NHS workers have worked tirelessly around the clock, putting their own lives on the line.

“We have been inspired by stories of bravery and selflessness. Some have left their families, some have come out of retirement to fight the pandemic.’

The Duchess added: “And the hard work still goes on. We remain indebted to them.

“It is a tremendous honour for us to present this award to the dedicated staff across the country.”
