Piers Morgan ‘s son Spencer admitted he thought the thieves who burgled their holiday home last week were family members.

The clan had been staying in Saint Tropez when the incident happened, with Piers’ wife Celia revealing their home had been targeted on the final night of their trip.

Spencer, who had heard the burglars outside of his bedroom, spoke about the incident on Twitter and labelled the thieves “rats”.

The 27 year old wrote: “Heard the rats outside my room. Pretty intense.”

He then added: “Assumed it was one of the family up early.”

It’s thought Spencer’s brother Bertie, 19, and their sister Elise, eight, were also at the holiday home at the time of the raid.

It’s believed their brother Stanley, 23, had already returned to the UK by this point.

Celia, 44, spoke of the heartbreak over having some of her treasured items that were taken.

One of the sentimental pieces of jewellery that was stolen was an art deco ring Piers had gifted her for their fifth anniversary.

She wrote in her Telegraph article: “The jewellery part did sting. It still stings now, almost a week on.

“The art deco ring my husband had bought me for our fifth wedding anniversary; the vintage Pucci cuff I’d picked up a flea market in LA; those earrings I’d bought from Alfies Antique Market on the Edgware Road when my first book advance came through: every last piece I had with me was gone, none of it of great value, all of it irreplaceable.”

Distraught Celia revealed the family got up at 6.15am to check out of their rented home, but explained it was a mess when they woke up despite cleaning it the night before.

It’s reported French police told Celia and Piers the thieves had only been in the holiday home 15 minutes earlier.

His wife explained she had a realisation that made her “fell sick” as she said her turned-up handbag that was found in the living room was originally placed in the bedroom.

She added: “They must have crept in there and stood inches away from us while we slept.”

Police also said they see an increase in burglaries on the French Riviera over summer as criminals come to the region to “do the season”.
