Phillip Schofield believes that his late dad ‘would have been proud’ of him for bravely coming out as gay earlier this year.
The 58-year-old This Morning star, who made the announcement on ITV in February, has opened up about the moment he chatted to his 84-year-old mum, Pat, about coming out as gay in the public eye.
During an emotional conversation, Phillip’s mum explained that his late dad, Brian, ‘would have been proud of his bravery’.
Reflecting upon the relationship he had with his dad, Phillip also noted that he had been the ‘kindest, sweetest’ father ever.
The This Morning star was chatting to Chris Evans on his podcast How To Wow when he opened up about the conversation he had with his mum.
“That’s like a grenade going off in my head,” Phillip explained.
“When I went down to Cornwall when I told my mum, I said, ‘What do you think Dad would have said? Would he still be proud?’
He continued: “Thankfully she said, ‘Yes… he’ll think you’re brave and he will always be proud of you. ‘ So that is good… My dad was one of the kindest, sweetest, most lovely people ever.”
Phillip’s dad sadly passed away in 2008 after being ill for quite some time.
Fondly reflecting upon his father, Phillip also went on to recall the moment Brian died.
He continued: “We knew it was going to happen, but when it finally did happen we heard from the hospital, who said it’s incredible how many people, and it is this extraordinary physical thing that a person who is near the end of their life who without even knowing maybe, waits until family have left the room and then they go quietly on their own.”
As well as being supported by his mum, Phillip also recently revealed how his wife Stephanie Lowe’s parents reacted when he came out as gay.
During the podcast, Phillip explained that he received a supportive text from Steph’s dad which stated that he had “nothing to be sorry for” about his brave admission.
