Olivia Newton-John has discussed the heartbreaking moment she was diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer.
The former Grease actress, 72, discovered her third diagnosis of the illness in 2017 after first being treated for the cancer in 1992 followed by a second time in 2013.
In a candid new video to promote her new foundation, Olivia recalled hearing about her terrifying discovery in a bid to help others who are suffering from cancer.
The star is setting up her own foundation to help those in need.
She said: “I am probably one of those people who’s living beyond cancer, living beyond probably what people expected to happen.
“I knew immediately something was wrong.”
The star continued: “I had a mammogram. The mammogram was benign and I had a needle biopsy that was also benign… I don’t say this to scare women, but you have to just trust your instincts.”
Olivia said she immediately booked an appointment with her doctor and agreed to get a surgical biopsy, when they later found out she had breast cancer.
She revealed: “All this was overwhelming. It was a feeling of dread, terror, the unknown.
“I made the decision that I would be okay. I had to believe I was going to be okay, that my daughter [Chloe Lattanzi] was the most important thing in my life and I would be okay for her.”
The famous actress has tried a variety of therapies, including meditation, acupuncture, massage and plant medicine to heal her body – in addition to conventional medicine.
She credited plants for their healing abilities, adding: “I have seen the incredible beauty of the plants and their healing abilities… if I hadn’t had that experience, I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you about kinder therapies… your body wants to heal itself.
“That’s why I’m excited to start this foundation.”
Her new foundation was set up to help other cancer sufferers, and states on the website: “We will fund the discovery of kinder therapies and advocate for more effective ways to prevent, treat and cure all cancers.”
Earlier this year, the Australian star gave fans an update on her cancer as she revealed the tumours had shrunk in size.
She told The Sunday Telegraph: “My tumours are receding or they’re going away or they’re staying the same, on a stage 4 metastatic breast cancer — that’s pretty amazing.
“If I hadn’t had the experience I’m having with cannabis I wouldn’t be able to talk about it.”
