Meghan Markle’s former BFF, Jessica Mulroney, has broken her silence to say she was “in the worst state” after a racism backlash.
The 40-year-old Canadian stylist was accused of ‘abusing her white privilege’ during an argument on social media, which prompted the Duchess of Sussex to cut ties with her despite a previously close relationship.
Jessica has kept a low profile since that incident but she returned to Instagram on Tuesday to celebrate her twin boys, Brian and John, turning 10.
She shared a video of her husband Ben carrying their birthday cake into their Toronto garden before adding an emotional message about how she has been affected by the backlash from her comments during a spat with black influencer Sasha Exeter.
She captioned the video: “Happy 10th to my twin babies. My incredible family have had to witness mom in the worst state.
“These two boys have not left my side and gave me the will to live and work hard when everything fell apart. They deserve the best birthday. Only up from here.”
Jessica received a warm welcome back to social media with supporters saying they are pleased that she has come back from her misjudgement.
One follower commented: “You made a bad judgement call. But you are human. We all make mistakes. Sadly yours cost you more than they cost most people in your industry.
“A lot of people know your sorry and you can’t keep beating yourself up. You gotta move forward. You have 4 people cheering you on at home.
“You can and will rebuild yourself from the person you are today. You are a good person. Keep your chin up. It is gonna get better i promise @jessicamulroney.”
A source told The Sun that this was the reaction that Jessica was hoping for on her return to the public eye.
They told the publication: “As soon as she posted this, people immediately began DMing to each other in both media and society circles, here in Canada – and beyond – which, let’s face it, was probably exactly the reaction she wanted.”
It didn’t go unnoticed that her return to social media coincided with the release of Finding Freedom, a biography of Meghan and Harry’s journey out of the royal family.
After the initial pleasantness, Jessica soon found herself subjected to some trolling as the mood began turning nasty, leading to her hitting back in the comments.
After it was pointed out that Meghan had “dumped” her following the initial backlash, Jessica hit back, writing: “Fake news. Just stop.”
Jessica had prompted the fallout when she took offence to Sasha Exeter sharing a ‘call to action’ for her followers to use their profiles to promote Black Lives Matter.
Jessica believed that this was aimed at her and was embroiled in a public spat, in which she took to private messages to threaten Sasha: “Liable suit, good luck [sic].”
Jessica later apologised for her behaviour but it was not enough to save her from being dropped from TV bridal show, ‘I Do, Redo’, with bosses at Canada’s CTV saying her comments went against their “commitment to diversity and equality.”
She also was fired from her role on ABC’s Good Morning America amid claims that Meghan was “mortified and heartbroken” at her friends misjudgement.
