Maura Higgins has opened up about her secret heartache over the death of a friend who was killed in an accident almost four years ago.
The 29-year-old Love Island star is haunted by the death of her friend Andrew Rowan who died aged 26 when his motorbike was involved in a crash with three cars in Co Athlone, Ireland.
Maura has explained that the death has deeply affected her own life and her personal outlook for the future as she realised just how short life can be.
In a candid discussion about her life a year after finding fame on Love Island, the star contemplated the biggest emotional challenged she has overcome so far.
Answering the question posed by the Sun on Sunday’s Fabulous Magazine, the star said: “Losing my best friend Andrew.
“He was killed in a motorbike accident four years ago. That was definitely the worst time of my life.”
“That experience taught me to live every day in the moment.”
Discussing the lessons she learned through coping with the death of a close friend, Maura explained that she feels she can’t plan her own future – as she feels she can never know what will be around the corner.
She said: “I get the question so many times: ‘Where do you see yourself in five years?’, and I can’t answer it because after that happened.”
She added: “I vowed to just enjoy every day and now I will not look to the future too much. You’re just not ready for something like that. It was awful.”
Maura previously revealed she blames herself for Andrew’s death.
In an interview with the Mirror last year, she revealed she turned down going out for dinner with Andrew the night he died – and blames herself for not committing to meet him and averting his fate.
She said: “For so long, I used to think that if I had gone for dinner with him that day, when he had asked, he wouldn’t have been on that motorbike.
