Maura Higgins has shared her fury after she was banned from buying wine by a “rude” Tesco employee, after she couldn’t produce ID to prove her age.

The Love Island and Dancing On Ice star will be 30 this year but was challenged under the Think 25 policy, which the supermarket is very strict about.

The reality star couldn’t produce ID to prove her age and was subsequently denied any chance of purchasing alcohol at the store, leading her to rant on social media about the decision.

After being refused at the checkout, Maura spoke out on her Instagram Story as she shared how “really f***ing annoying” the situation was.

Speaking through a mask in the video, which looks like she recorded while still in the supermarket, Maura said: “I’m literally in Tesco. I was asked for ID while buying wine. I said to the lady, ‘I’m 29, turn 30 next month’.

“And she said ‘there’s not much I can do’, very rude.

“It’s a compliment in a way that I look run, but in another way what if I really wanted a glass of wine tonight. It’s really f***ing annoying.”

Fans of Maura, who is also a model for Ann Summers, pointed out that she was wearing a necklace with her birth year of 1990 emblazoned on it, but she admitted that she hadn’t thought of that in the heat of the moment.

To avoid selling alcohol to customers who are under the legal age, the supermarket are strict with their Think 25 policy, asking customers who they think do not look 25 or over to produce ID to prove it.

Tesco says about their policy: “We have strong systems in place to ensure we do not sell to underage customers, including our ‘Think 25’ policy to help staff know when to ask for ID and refuse a sale where appropriate.

“We also use checkout prompts, including a date of birth, to support our colleagues when checking ID on alcoholic and low alcoholic and alcohol free variants of alcoholic brands.”

Their statement continued: “Our colleagues are trained to understand their responsibilities and this training is reviewed regularly. We also use mystery shoppers to test whether our cashiers are correctly challenging customers to prove their age.”

After Maura had an avalanche of messages from fans about her necklace, she took to Instagram again to add: “Loads of people have pointed out my necklace says 1990, I didn’t even realise that at the time…”
