Matt Cardle claims he came very close to dating Meghan Markle just before she met Prince Harry.

The When We Collide singer, 37, won the X Factor exactly 10 years ago today.

To mark the anniversary, Matt has revealed he and the Duchess of Sussex got close before their lives went in totally different directions.

The pair swapped messages in 2015 after Meghan followed Matt on Twitter while he was starring in West End show Memphis.

They came close to grabbing dinner – but she soon had a royal appointment.

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, Matt – now with girlfriend Amber Hernaman – said: “It was just a very weird situation, very odd. I really don’t know how it came about.

“Life’s got a course and I was not on that one. I’ve laughed about it, but it’s amazing thinking back.”

Matt then revealed he came very close to quitting the X Factor weeks before he won it.

He got very unwell during the series 10 years ago and almost jacked it all in before convinced to fight back to full health.

Matt is glad he did – he created history but becoming the most voted-for winner of the ITV talent show ever.

But it needed some painful injections to see him through.

He told the publication: “It was pretty claustrophobic. We were all just eating cold chicken nuggets most nights and being herded around by security.

“We were all getting ill and giving each other colds. I’d had the flu, tonsillitis, bronchitis, laryngitis, — everything. I was an absolute mess. I don’t know how I managed to get through it.

“The X Factor people were like, ‘Look, you can not do the Saturday show but that means you’re out’. I was having steroid injections in my butt cheeks to get me up and moving.
