Kenny Omega Confirms That An AEW Game Is In Development, Says It’s Taking Inspiration From WWF No Mercy And WrestleMania 2000

When All Elite Wrestling’s weekly television show — Dynamite — launched last fall, fans of pro wrestling video games began to wonder when the company would get a deal for a video game. Since then, there’s been some news regarding an AEW video game, but, as of this writing, there hasn’t been an official announcement.

During a recent interview with Venn, AEW star Kenny Omega confirmed that a video game is in development, but he couldn’t share any details regarding when it’ll be released, or who it’s being developed by.

“Yes, we are in production of a video game. We have a lot of creative minds at work at the new video game right now. I think people are going to like it, and I think that what the fans are hoping for is, in fact, going to come to fruition.

“I’m hoping that it really is sort of a brand new take on something that’s like the No Mercy game of old. So, if you liked WrestleMania 2000, No Mercy, VPW – we are very much hoping to recreate the same feel, the same fun-factor, the same pick-up-and-play ability of those games in the past. So, look forward to that. We are working diligently to give you guys something in the near future.”

Trying to replicate games like WWF No Mercy and WrestleMania 2000 has been the goal of a lot of developers throughout the years, but since those iconic games were released in 1999 and 2000, nobody has been able to recreate the feel of those two games, which are widely considered to be the best pro wrestling games ever.

As for who could be developing the AEW video game, the current speculation is that it’s going to be made by Yuke’s, who recently parted ways with longtime partner 2K. In fact, most point to Yukes’ departure from 2K as one of the biggest reasons why WWE 2K20 was such a disaster at launch.

Yuke’s has a pretty good track record when it comes to wrestling games, with their two most notable releases being WWE SmackDown: Shut Your Mouth and WWE SmackDown: Here Comes The Pain, with the latter being in the conversation with No Mercy and WrestleMania 2000 as the greatest wrestling game ever.

It’s unclear when we’ll get some official news regarding AEW’s video game, but given that no official announcements have been made, it’s likely that the game won’t be revealed until after the launch of the next-gen consoles later this year.
