Strictly Come Dancing star Michelle Visage said Ms Ginsburg’s death left a “massive hole in democracy”.

She wrote: “You, my lady, were a beacon of strength, light, hope and love!!!! You are appreciated more than you will ever know.”

Justice Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993 and served more than 27 years on the Court – becoming a legal, cultural and feminist icon.

Her departure could dramatically alter the ideological balance of the court, which currently has a 5-4 conservative majority, by moving it further to the right.

Just days before her death, Justice Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera, saying: “My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”

Donald Trump learned of her death from reporters, after leaving a rally in Minnesota.

The president was asked him for a comment as he boarded a plane Friday evening.

“She just died? Wow. I didn’t know that, you’re telling me now for the first time,” he said.
