Kate Thornton vows to give up fags as son Ben disapproves of her ‘ridiculous’ habit

Former X Factor presenter Kate Thornton is set to quit smoking for good as she starts Stoptober next month in a bid to become a better ‘role model’ for her son Ben

Former X Factor presenter Kate Thornton is determined to quit smoking for good.

The telly star, 47, started socially smoking in her 20s.

Kate gave up on fags years ago, but in 2016 she revealed she’d caved in and gone back to them.

“I’ve just started smoking again and I’m not proud. I’ve got to get it into check,” she told The Sun at the time.

Fast forward four years and mum-of-one Kate has vowed to give up her biggest vice now for the sake of her 12-year-old son Ben, as she’s his “role model”.

She has signed up to Stoptober, the 28-day smoking challenge, in a bid to stump out her bad habit.

The challenge will begin from tomorrow, October 1, and is proven to make people five times more likely to quit for good if completed successfully.

It’s her latest goal after recently toning up throughout the lockdown.

She told Daily Star : “Now I’ve achieved the levels of fitness that I want it’s time for me to seal the deal and give up smoking.”

“I successfully quit for five or six years at a time and then stupidly flipped back into it which has normally been on a holiday or a night out and then before you know it, you don’t control it, it controls you.”

Kate wants to quit for Ben as he gets “angry” at her for smoking.

The TV star admitted her son thinks her habit is “ridiculous”, adding: “My job is to be his role model. I hope that I haven’t disappointed him in any other way, but I know that is a great disappointment.”

Kate admitted she first gave up in her early 30s after finding out she had a chest infection, but she said it “went on and on”.

The star eventually slipped back into the habit before she quit again after finding out she was pregnant with ex-boyfriend DJ Darren Emerson.

She used Nicorette patches to help her give up smoking.

Four years after having son Ben she went back and put it down to “difficulties in my personal life”.

Kate’s health is getting better in other ways, as she’s been enjoying HIIT training six times a week during lockdown and is the “fittest she’s been” in a long time.

She is “confident” she’ll give up smoking for good this time and says the Stoptober app is a like “a cheerleader in your pocket”.

She’s hoping that people quitting smoking is one of the good things that will come out of the coronavirus crisis.
