Kate Garraway has spoken about how “horrendous and difficult” a year that 2020 has been.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 53, has faced a harsher time than most as her husband Derek Draper, 53, was placed in an induced coma due to his battle with Covid-19.

The presenter has already spoken at length about the struggle this has placed herself and their children Darcey and Billy through, but now she and close friend and colleague Ben Shephard are set to honour those who gave time to others in 2020 with GMB’s 1 Million Minutes Awards.

Kate explained: “It has been so incredible to see people give their valuable free time to help others in need, especially during what has been a horrendous and difficult year.

“We have seen more loneliness and isolation than ever before.

“It’s been a real mixture of seeing wonderful communities and people helping each other in amazing ways coupled with that loneliness at the core of it.”

The Good Morning Britain star added: “Never before have we needed the goodwill of the British people to get us through 2020.

“The extraordinary acts of kindness reflect this brilliantly, and I guarantee that our winners will lift everyone up.”

It comes as Ben Shephard praised Kate for her attitude throughout this difficult year.

“There is not a moment when I’m working with her where that admiration tarnishes,” said Ben. “Kate is so brilliant and professional and we have fun so you sometimes forget the relentless journey that they are on at the moment.

“We all want to know what the outcome is going to be and that is the hardest thing, not knowing.

“In 2021, I will undoubtedly be more optimistic and positive, because of my friendship with Kate and how much I admire her.”

We hope Kate and family have a much better year as we welcome 2021!
