Jamie Redknapp spoke about the moment he heard his dad Harry almost died in a horror car crash.
The ex-footballer appeared on This Morning and chatted to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about the “most difficult time of his life”.
Football pundit Jamie’s father was left fighting for his life after the tragic car crash during a trip to Italy, which killed four people.
Bournemouth managing director Brian Tiler was killed in the tragic accident.
Jamie, 47, speaks about the tragedy in his new autobiography Me, Family and the Making of a Footballer.
His mother Sandra, 72, knew something wasn’t quite right after her husband didn’t call her during the trip with his friends at the 1990 Italy World Cup.
Harry usually called her three times a day.
This is the first time Jamie has spoken about the incident.
He told Holly and Phil: “I think that was most difficult time of my life, he’s my dad and best friend. He went over to Italy during Italia 90. He’d gone over with friends, mum said something is not right as dad always calls.”
Harry’s son explained how he heard about the crash the following morning.
“They called in the morning to say Brian Tiler died in the crash but dad was ok,” he continued. “He had a broken leg and fractured skull, it was so tough for us all to go through.”
The minivan collided with a car full of three Irish fans who also all lost their lives.
Jamie admitted that his dad doesn’t like to talk about the crash and says opening up for the book was “theraputic” for both of them.
He said: “He’s old school, he doesn’t want to talk, he sort of buries it.”
Previously, Harry told The Sun about how the incident unfolded, saying: “A car hurtled towards us on the wrong side of the road.
“I’m told it was going 90 miles per hour. I’m told the smash was so horrific that it was a miracle anyone got out alive. Brian didn’t. Nor did the occupants of the other car, three Italian lads who all died instantly.
“The force of the impact threw me out of the minibus and knocked me unconscious. I was then dragged away from the mangled wreckage, covered in petrol, by Michael Sinclair, who was petrified by the thought that it would all explode.”
