Hollyoaks star David Easter has opened up on his heartbreaking suicide attempt and past battle with alcohol and drugs.
The actor, 61, who is best known for his former role as Mac Nightingale on the Channel 4 soap, candidly spoke about his life experiences after he was named the new patron for charity Kenward Trust, which specialises in helping people deal with drug and alcohol addiction.
David says he “became a drug addict from the age of 30” after being triggered by his troubled childhood past.
The star bravely told Kent Online : “I was a functioning alcoholic and a drug addict from the age of 30. It’s triggered by a traumatic experience which for me was that I had a pretty bad childhood.
“It was like a horror film. I suffered sexual and physical abuse. I always tried to push it to the back of my mind but at 40-years-old I had a mental breakdown.”
The addiction became so out of control that David revealed he tried to take his own life earlier this year in January.
Thankfully, he was saved by a friend who he made a phone call to on the day he tried to take his own life.
He said: “I attempted to take my own life but I was stopped. Then I made a phone call to a friend and I went to stay with him and he put me in touch with Kenward Trust.”
After reaching out to the charity, David has managed to turn his life around.
He said if it wasn’t for the charity, he doesn’t think he’d be alive today.
David added: “I’m not being over dramatic but if it wasn’t for Kenward Trust, I think I would be dead.”
