Glenn Close doesn’t think Gwyneth Paltrow deserved her Oscar in 1999.
The Dangerous Liaisons star, 73, believes the Academy missed the mark when it awarded Gwyneth a Best Actress gong for Shakespeare In Love.
Appearing on ABC’s Popcorn with Peter Travers, the 101 Dalmatians star admitted she would’ve rather seen actress Fernanda Montenegro scoop the win for her performance in Central Station.
“I honestly feel that to be nominated by your peers is about as good as it gets,” she said.
“And then, I’ve never understood how you could honestly compare performances, you know?
“I remember the year Gwyneth Paltrow won over that incredible actress who was in ‘Central Station’ and I thought, ‘What?’ It doesn’t make sense.”
“So I think who wins has a lot of things to do with how things have been, you know, whether it has traction or whatever.
“Publicity, how much money did they have to put it out in front of everybody’s sight. I have to be philosophical about it.”
The actress said she’s taken her Oscar losses in stride, adding: “If I was upset about it, you know, might as well be in another – and I’m very proud of the times that my peers have felt that my performances was worthy of attention.”
Gwyneth got her only Oscar win and nomination for her role as Viola de Lesseps in Shakespeare In Love.
The role also got her the best actress gong at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Another controversy surrounding the film was how Gwyneth came to get the lead role.
Actress Winona Ryder claims the Goop founder stole the Shakespeare In Love script from her.
She says Gwyneth found the script in her house one night and instantly wanted to be cast for it.
After auditioning for the role, Gwyneth was cast for the hit 1998 film – leaving Winona foaming at the mouth with rage.
Winona went public with her version of the story, however Gwyneth has always categorically denied she stole anything and instead claimed Winona’s “jealousy” caused her to “make up lies”.
The pair no longer talk and are considered to be “frenemies” in Hollywood.
