A shadow of doubt has been cast over the future of Glastonbury Festival.
Festival founder Michael Eavis, 84, has voiced his anxieties about future performances being able to go ahead next year amid the raging coronavirus pandemic.
Glastonbury 2020 was cancelled despite marking the 50th anniversary this year.
The future of the festival has been plunged into chaos after the boss branded Glastonbury 2021 “wishful thinking”.
Concert-goers could have a two-year wait for Glastonbury’s epic return.
Concerns for the festival have been snowballing but the festival founder said his team were doing everything in their power to get it up and running for 2021.
He told ITV News West Country: “500 people is OK, isn’t it? But my job, 250,000 altogether is too many people I suppose really.
“I’m still hoping I’m going to be running next year and I’m going to be moving heaven and earth to make sure that we do. But that doesn’t mean it will necessarily happen. That is just wishful thinking really.”
Despite his own concerns, the founder insisted the festival will survive the pitfalls of the Covid-19 chaos.
However, Michael said concert-goers may not be able to get to experience Glastonbury until 2022.
He added: “I do not worry at all (about Glastonbury’s future). I am so confident that it will survive. The only certainty I think is the year after, 2022, to be perfectly candid. So we might have to wait for two years maybe.”
Glastonbury was scheduled to take place in June this year before it was cancelled.
It has a huge following of people with many regulars returning to the festival every year in Somerset.
The music event takes place usually over a five-day period.
