Ellen DeGeneres tweeted about how it ‘felt good’ to ‘make employee cry’
American television presenter Ellen DeGeneres has had an old tweet go viral after it refer to making her employees cry as the current scandal about her show rumbles on
An unearthed tweet from Ellen DeGeneres from 2009 has gone viral as it refers to her making ’employees cry’.
The attention the tweet has gotten comes as The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been at the centre of a scandal surrounding workplace ‘toxicity’.
Three of the show’s producers have been fired, with executive producers Ed Glavin and Kevin Leman and co-executive producer Jonathan Norman all being given the boot from the daytime talk show.
In light of the accusations against the conduct of producers behind the scenes, it means one tweet taken out of context has not aged well, prompting its renewed attention on social media.
On June 5, 2009, Ellen tweeted: “I made one of my employees cry like a baby on today’s show. Honestly, it felt good”.
The tweet referred to the episode Season 6 Episode 6107 from 2009, where Ellen surprised employee Jeannie Klisiewicz with a cruise.
The moment saw Ellen praise a crying Jeannie for her hard work.
An insider told the Daily Mail that this was all due to Jeannie “always making everyone feel so good when they come into the office.”
Despite the sweet moment being the reason for the tweet at the time, the new context of Ellen’s show encountering controversy was not lost on those sharing it today.
One Twitter user shared the tweet, writing: “Legitimately thought this was photoshopped when I saw a screen cap of it on twitter.”
“LMAO Why is there always a tweet,” commented another person to share the vintage post.
Meanwhile, a different person tweeted: “LMFAOOO you would think she purged her twitter account by now”.
One Twitter user joked: “Celebrities should just delete their twitters for their own sake LMAOO”.
“THIS IS A REAL TWEET WHAT THE HELL,” wrote a different person sharing the tweet.
Finally, one Twitter user concluded: “I know it’s an old tweet, but welp… Holds a different context if tweeted in 2020”.
Meanwhile, Ellen reportedly told 200 employees about why her behaviour can be miscontrued.
According to Deadline, Ellen told staff: “I’m a multi-layered person, and I try to be the best person I can be and try to learn from my mistakes.”
Page Six adds that she said: “I don’t know where it started. Please talk to me. Look me in the eye.
“It’s crazy, just not true, I don’t know how it started. [It’s] not who I am.”
