Dr Dre reportedly faces losing as much as $1 billion in his divorce from wife Nicole Young as they come to loggerheads over the prenuptial agreement.
The rapper, whose real name is Andre Romelle Young, announced in June that he and his wife for filing for divorce after 24 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences.
But now, it’s said that a whopping $1 billion is on the line after Nicole claimed she was forced to sign the prenup back in 1996 and that he later regretted it and tore it up.
In new legal documents obtained by TMZ, Nicole says her estranged husband is now with £1bn, way more than when they tied the knot.
She says: “I was extremely reluctant, resistant and afraid to sign the agreement and felt backed into a corner. Given the extraordinary pressure and intimidation by Andre, I was left with no option but to hire a lawyer (of course, with the help of Andre’s team of professionals) and unwillingly signed the agreement very shortly before our marriage.”
She also claims that Dre said he regretted the move when they discussed it two years into their marriage.
She continued: “Andre acknowledged to me that he felt ashamed he had pressured me into signing a premarital agreement and he tore up multiple copies of the agreement in front of me. Since the day he tore up the agreements, we both understood that there was no premarital agreement, and that it was null and void.”
The Blast reports that Nicole’s filing says Dre “destroyed the agreements as a grand gesture of his love for Nicole and his desire to have a marriage free of any financial restrictions governing their respective rights and responsibilities.”
But sources close to the rapper deny everything Nicole is saying.
An insider tells TMZ that Dre has never expressed shame over his prenup and that he never tore it up.
They say Nicole, who is a lawyer, had her own lawyer as well as a clear choice on whether or not to sign the agreement.
The sources insist that Dre has made it clear that he will pay spousal support as well as all of Nicole’s expenses, but that she wants a bigger chunk of his cash and is claiming that he made most of his fortune during their marriage.
She is reportedly asking the judge to separate the divorce from the prenup issue.
A hearing on the issue is set for December.
Dre, 55, and Nicole, 50, married in 1996.
They have two grown up children – son Truice, 23, and daughter Truly, 19, – meaning that child support won’t be an issue.
Nicole claims Dre is worth $1bn, but Forbes had put his new worth at an estimated $800 million.
Part of his fortune comes from his founding of the Beats Electronics brand.
The rapper is also the founder and CEO of Aftermath Entertainment, and was previously a co-owner of Death Row Records.
Nicole and Dr Dre made their last public appearance together in February, when they attended a Tom Ford fashion show with their daughter.
