Dominic West and Lily James could face official sanctions in Italy after they were pictured breaking the country’s tough Covid rules.
The 51-year-old star of The Affair has faced a media storm since he was snapped allegedly kissing Downton Abbey star Lily James, 31, while they spent time in Rome together.
The pair were photographed courting more controversy after they took a tandem ride on an e-scooter.
The pair wore face masks as Lily rode up front, checking her mobile phone, as Dominic reached around her from behind as they appeared cosy while nipping through the streets of Rome.
Italy currently forbids two people riding on a scooter together, as they try and curb the spread of coronavirus in the country.
There is a fine of 200 euros for anyone found guilty of breaching the restrictions.
This seemed a long way from Dominic and Lily’s minds as they had a carrier bag adorned with love hearts hanging from the handlebars, which hinted at a spot of retail therapy, on a trip in which has caused a furore.
The Sun has reported that local councillor Stefano Marin said: “The law is quite clear – riding tandem on an e-scooter is forbidden.
“It’s a breach of the highway code and a breach of the new Covid laws.
“You are supposed to maintain social distance and riding tandem on a scooter is not keeping social distance.
“Now we have been made aware of this we shall be investigating. The law is equal for all.”
Dominic and Lily returned to the UK amid a backlash over the photos and The Wire star was later pictured with his wife Catherine FitzGerald, 49, as they posed as a ‘show of togetherness’.
The couple insisted that they were still very much in love and that there was an innocent explanation for the photos.
Lily has cancelled her media engagements, including an appearance on the BBC’s Graham Norton Show, as she takes some time away from the spotlight.
