Corrie’s Beverley Callard on her kids’ heartbreaking reaction to health battle

Former Coronation Street actress Beverley Callard has spoken out about her children’s reactions to her health battle in recent months after her botched hip operation

Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has revealed how her children were ‘tearful’ after seeing her in person for the first time in months.

The actress, best known as Liz McDonald on the Manchester-set ITV soap opera, had a botched hip operation back in March that required her to undergo corrective surgery in July after weeks of pain and being unable to walk.

Now Beverley has spoken of her reunion with her children, Rebecca, 45, and Joshua, 31, and her stepchildren, Ben, 34, Jon, 31, and Danielle, 29, after much time apart.

Beverley told the Daily Express about her “emotional” reunion with her children following her health battles and surgeries.

She said: “My children were quite upset to see me.

“Because even though we’d FaceTimed, they were quite shocked when they saw me in person.

“The girls, particularly, got tearful. But they’re strong, like me!”

Beverley also spoke about her hopes of being able to walk again by Christmas, but her recovery has been a slow one.

She said: “My whole life has just stopped. I don’t know when I’ll be fully recovered.

“The hardest thing is I have no independence. I can’t drive or get myself anywhere.”

Meanwhile, Beverley’s husband Jon McEwan spoke to OK! Magazine about the toll of his wife’s health battle on their children, who were saddened to see their mother looking so fragile.

Jon revealed: “I think they felt upset to see how fragile Beverley looked.

“It’s been such a hard time and you can mask quite a lot on the phone but when they saw their mum, it was hard.

“But we’re trying to stay upbeat as a family.”

Coronation Street fans will have to wait longer for a proper send-off for Beverley’s character Liz McDonald, whose exit from the soap was curtailed by both the Covid-19 pandemic and Beverley’s health dramas.

She previously said: “I will go back maybe the beginning of next year.

“So they will see a bit more of Liz and it’s going to be very dramatic I believe!”

In the meantime, Liz has made an off-screen exit and is now in Spain.
