Colin Farrell is utterly unrecognisable as The Penguin in The Batman trailer

Irish actor Colin Farrell looks utterly unrecognisable in the first trailer for The Batman.

The Hollywood star, 44, has undergone quite the transformation to portray the villainous DC Comics character The Penguin/Oswald ‘Oz’ Cobblepot.

Colin portrays one of many villainous characters who will face off with Robert Pattinson as The Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Known for his rugged and chiselled good looks, beneath a heavy and rounded face that looks ripped from the pages of the comic books, many did not recognise the star.

The trailer was unveiled at the virtual DC FanDome event and director Matt Reeves says of Farrell’s Penguin in the film: “Oz is not yet the kingpin that he’s going to become, he’s The Penguin and in fact doesn’t like being called The Penguin.”

The appearance of Farrell in the film caused quite the stir on social media, with many noting how epic Farrell’s metamorphosis into the character has been.

One person wrote on Twitter : “It’s been 18 hours and my brain is still having trouble accepting the fact this is Colin Farrell. #TheBatman “.

Another DC fan commented: “I had to search the eyes to confirm this is, in fact, my man Colin Farrell. #TheBatman#DCFanDome “.

Meanwhile, one person is still not convinced, writing: “Did Reeves or anyone official confirm that this is Colin Farrell? I’m still not convinced lmfao this is scarily good make-up work.”

Elsewhere, one is just disappointed that Farrell is not bringing his good looks to a sexier version of The Penguin.

They tweeted: “How much time and money was wasted on making Colin Farrell un-sexy? Absolute waste. The people demand a sexy Penguin!”

Finally, one Batman fan concluded: “NO F***ING WAY. COLIN FARRELL?! Now *this* is how you do prosthetic makeup. Holy s**t, he is unrecognizable! #TheBatman “.

Other cast members starring in the film and visible in the trailer include Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, and Paul Dano as a rather creepy looking take on The Riddler/Edward Nashton.

Also due to appear in the film are John Turturro as crime boss Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as district attorney Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál, Barry Keoghan as police officer Stanley Merkel, and Andy Serkis as Bruce’s trusted butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

The Batman will be released in cinemas on October 1, 2021.
