Its graphic lyrics contain such “outrageous filth”, attempts to censor them have been likened to a task on the Crystal Maze.
So UK radio bosses have been scratching their heads over playing rappers Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s new single WAP – an acronym it’s probably best we don’t elaborate on – which is set to chart around the Top 5 this Friday.
A heavily sanitised version received a play on BBC’s Radio 1 chart update on Sunday.
So many rude words were masked, host Katie Thistleton said it consisted mainly of “dings and bleeps”.
“The team had a right job on their hands censoring this. It’s filth,” she chuckled.
Kiss FM decided cleaned-up versions “butchered” the song too much to play it.
The station’s radio producer, Rachael Devine, admitted: “There’s a new round on the Crystal Maze… trying to make a version of WAP that can actually be played on radio. Impossible.
“There’s no song left.”
But Cardi B was on Kiss Breakfast this week to promote it.
The track caused outrage in the US. Republican Congressional candidate James P. Bradley said it “made me want to pour holy water in my ears”.
Which is probably why the accompanying video, starring Kylie Jenner, has had over 70 million views in just five days…
Yesterday, Radio 1 decided they WILL add their heavily cleaned-up version of the song to their B lists.
Hope listeners like bleeps!
