Boris Johnson’s TV and radio presenter sister has openly questioned her brother’s childhood memories about holidaying in the UK.
The 54-year-old says she ‘racked her brains’ when she heard him encouraging the nation to stay in the UK for their summer breaks during his speech last Friday, and was left further puzzled when the Prime Minister spouted that some of his best childhood memories took place on UK-based holidays.
As she penned her column for the Daily Mail – during her own staycation to Scotland, which she admitted had a “spirit-lowering contrast to the Med or the Caribbean” – she recalled what her brother had said in a bid to encourage people to boost the economy by holidaying in the British Isles.
Rachel recalled her brother’s words: “‘There are all sorts of fantastic destinations, the best in the world, I would say,’ he told the nation last Friday, if memory serves. ‘All my happiest holiday memories are of holiday vacations here in the UK, bucket-and spade jobs or whatever.'”
Proving she was unsure of what he meant, she added: “I racked my brains to think which holidays he meant. The time it rained in Ireland or on Mull? Or one of the childhood summers in West Somerset, one of the wettest places in the kingdom? But I agreed with him in principle.”
Rachel went on to detail how she had not enjoyed her trip to Scotland and that she was bogged down by the cold and rainy weather and having to pack heaps more than if she jetted off to warmer climes.
And proving that she is not backing staycations in the future, she fumed: “And if anyone suggests another patriotic staycation next year, they can take a hike.”
Rachel recently admitted that her brother Boris seems like a “different person” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The author and journalist, made the admission when appearing on The Jeremy Vine Show via video link in March, said that she watched one of his addresses to the nation, she felt “sympathy for him”.
She also said that “everyone’s lives are in his hands” and that “his job couldn’t be harder”.
Speaking to host Jeremy, she revealed that she had been forced to cancel all of the events to promote her new book Rake’s Progress: My Political Midlife Crisis.
However, Jeremy went on to ask her about the prime minister, commenting: “I am seeing a different person.”
Rachel agreed, saying: “This is an unprecedented time… this could not be more serious.”
She continued: “We have never faced anything like this before as a nation or world… it’s a matter of life or death.
“I watched his address to the nation last night,” Rachel added.
“One can’t help but feel sympathy … everyone’s lives are in his hands and his job couldn’t be harder.”
