Amanda Holden has revealed that she never even realised that her Britian’s Got Talent fellow judge Alesha Dixon was sporting a Black Lives Matter necklace following the show’s Diversity dance controversy.
After defiant Alesha, 41, shared her support behind the Black Lives Matter movement on the ITV talent series by modelling a gold necklace that spelled BLM, viewers became outraged.
The widespread disapproval was ignited again by Alesha’s glittering statement after the racist backlash to Diversity’s BGT performance the week prior.
Ofcom received 1,901 complaints after the show aired on September 19 as unimpressed viewers found fault with the singer’s choice of jewellery.
While others fixed their eyes on the statement necklace, Alesha’s BGT co-star and long-term pal Amanda ‘didn’t even realise’ that the gold necklace spelled out ‘BLM’.
While she did admire the loud piece of bling, Amanda told The Huffington Post that she didn’t initially recognise the meaning behind Alesha’s defiant jewellery – and it was all down to her eyesight.
The blonde bombshell, 49, explained: “I didn’t even realise she was wearing it! I was sat right next to her and was like ‘Oh, that’s lovely! And she went ‘Look at it babe’ and I went ‘Oh, yes’. It took me ages… it’s my eyes you see – I’m sat a couple of meters away.”
Addressing the backlash, Amanda insisted that her dear friend was well capable of fighting her own battles, and that she doesn’t intends on backing down about such an important social issue.
She insisted: “Alesha, believe me, is tough and can fight her own corner. She doesn’t need me but she’s got me right there if she needs me… I’ve got a mouthguard and a hot towel ready.”
Opening up about the Diversity dance controversy which has since received over 24,500 Ofcom complaints from furious viewers, Amanda suggested that people should take a look back at the year we have all endured to fully grasp the message of the powerful dance.
“I would say that we mustn’t forget that it was a performance that reflected the entire year, not just the tragedy in America of George Floyd. It was celebrating the NHS and our sense of community, which is ironic after we received those complaints.”
The stunning star admitted that the negative attention ‘annoyed’ her as it took away from the overall positive message instilled in the performance.
After being one of the first people to witness the dance before her eyes, Amanda ‘felt honoured’.
She also insisted that ITV did a fantastic job of standing by it and helping people see that TV isn’t just there to comfort and entertain, it’s also a vital tool to educate audiences.
Ofcom has since announced it will not be investigating the Diversity performance, explaining: “Its central message was a call for social cohesion and unity.”
