Donald Trump tried to embrace his Mr Darcy side with a romantic gesture to his wife Melania.

The President and First Lady of the United States got tongues wagging when they were filmed stepping off Air Force One with son Barron at Joint Base Andrews.

As they descended down the steps, Trump was seeing trying to grab hold of his wife’s hand, but it looked like she wasn’t having any of it.

Melania clutched a handbag in her hand that her husband appeared to be holding onto until she pulled it away from him and closer to her side.

And despite his attempts to make contact again, he wasn’t successful.

Body language expert Judi James exclusively examined the footage for Mirror Online.

She said: “Trump never used to be known for his PDAs but the looming election does seem to have brought out his Mr Darcy side.

“This romantic re-branding of his body language doesn’t seem to be cutting much ice with Melania here though and the woman who was once seen apparently swatting her husband’s hand away looks just as determined to avoid a clasp on the steps of the plane here.

“Trump does appear to give good warning with some chat and a big announcement gesture as he moves his hand towards hers, but Melania still has her bag in that hand, plus she’s battling with the strong wind, so pulls her hand away across her body.

“Trump refuses to give up though, and we can see three almost childlike, questioning tie-signs: a small tap, an opened palm and a stretched finger, before he gives up and places a steering arm behind her back instead.

“It’s the speed of Melania’s movement that makes her look so assertive and firm here, but once they reach the ground she moves her back to signal that clasp is back on the cards again.”

The footage caused debate when it was posted on Twitter.

One person wrote: “Hard not to notice Trump repeatedly trying to hold Melania’s hand on their way down the steps and her having none of it”

“Lol Melania never wants to hold his hand,” another suggested.

While Nancy Sinatra posted: “I think it’s nice that he is trying to help her down the steps.”

And another offered a different theory, writing: “People talking s**t… She doesn’t give him her hand because she was worried about the wind blowing up her skirt”

One posted: “There are many couples who held hands in public and are no longer together. Every couple is different”
