Russell Brand caused a stir when he shared his response to Cardi B’s erotic WAP video.
Its X-rated scenes featuring Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and Kylie Jenner have been all the celeb world could talk about since it was released.
Now the comedian, 45, has debated whether the video was a feminist masterpiece or in fact porn.
His explanation video was met with controversy and riled up followers on Twitter which sent his name trending on the side bar of the social media site on Saturday.
Among the swarms, one wrote: “Russell Brand telling women how to do a feminism, can sod right off.”
In the video, Russell was trying to investigate whether it could be empowering for women if they were in fact just replicating values established by the male hierarchy.
He said: “Do we achieve equality by aspiring to qualities the values established by the forces or authors of the hierarchy in system? ie. Do women achieve equality by aspiring to and replicating to the values established by males?
“Let’s take this one simple example, if male hip hop tropes are about the potency of male sexuality – it’s reductive, not celebratory of traditional male values such as duty loyalty, bravery, courage…
“Female video is sexual potency, sexuality, sensuality. It’s an emulation of a template already exists.”
Bizarrely the funnyman compared Cardi B’s efforts to the leadership of Margaret Thatcher.
Russell faced a backlash from fans for his explanation of the music video.
Others added: “Congratulations to Russell Brand for mansplaining to women how they should enjoy WAP & their own sexuality.”
“The fact Russell Brand thinks women displaying sexuality is them emulating men, rather than seeing them as equally sexual beings really summarises the problem with this take imo.”
Many leaped to his defence while his name continued to trend on social media.
Others wrote: “I think this is a really interesting argument that @rustyrockets brings up. Its the two waves of feminism conflicting, IS it empowerment to act out male fantasy? I think the debate is necessary.”
