Dame Barbara Windsor has celebrated her first birthday since moving into a care home and her former EastEnders co-stars have paid emotional tributes.

The legendary actress turned 83 on Thursday and a number of EastEnders stars took to social media to share their love for her on her big day,

Barbara famously played Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap since 1994 and the likes of Lacey Turner, Tamzin Outhwaite and Emma Barton all shared birthday wishes.

The former Carry On actress was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in April 2014 but did not go public with it until four years later.

Scott Mitchell, Barbara’s husband of 20 years, recently revealed that they made the heartbreaking decision to move her into a care home as her dementia worsened.

Among those who shared their thoughts on Barbara’s birthday Lacey Turner, who played Stacey Slater in the Walford based soap.

She shared a photo of her with Barbara and captioned it: “Happy birthday to this Wonder Woman hope your day is as beautiful as you ❤️❤️❤️.”

Lacey was joined by Emma Barton, who plays Honey Mitchell, in sharing a tribute to Barbara with a photo of them together along with Perry Fenwick, who plays Billy Mitchell.

Emma captioned the snap: “There is nothing like a Dame…. My #tbt has to be of my favourite Dame… Happy Birthday Bar…”

Tamzin, who played Mel Owen, made it a trio of soap tributes by tweeting a photo of her and Babs.

She wrote with it: “Happy birthday to gorgeous Barbara Windsor … and sending so much love to Scott. ❤️.”

Barbara was placed in a care home on the advice of Barbara’s neurologist who felt she needed full-time attention, a decision that left Scott heartbroken.

Speaking to The Sun, Scott said: “I feel I’m on an emotional rollercoaster. I walk around, trying to keep busy, then burst in to tears. It feels like a bereavement.

“It’s always been my biggest fear, that one day I would have to take her somewhere and she’d be thinking, ‘Why would he do this to me?’

“That fear has become a reality. It’s something I never wanted.”
