Coronation Street: Jodie Prenger makes her debut

Jodie Prenger ‘s life on screen and at home, away from the cameras, couldn’t be further extremes.

The 43-year-old actress has recently arrived on Coronation Street, playing the character Glenda Shuttleworth but off-screen, she is spending her time surrounded by animals, some of which she has described as being “feral”.

Jodie likes nothing more that rescuing an animal and turning its life around, though she is pretty chuffed at landing a role on ITV’s Corrie, as it fulfilled a lifelong dream.

Glenda has arrived in Weatherfield and saved her brother George, when he was high on painkillers.

Speaking about the role, Jodie said: “My family are from Manchester, all from Moss Side and they used to have a laundrette and a café shop and my Nan’s brother used to deliver Pat Phoenix’s groceries.”

While being a soap star may seem rather glamorous, Jodie has said that away from Corrie, she loves to get hands-on and mucky with her menagerie of animals, including cows and chickens.

With her partner Simon, Jodie said that she is a rather different character to the one that viewers see. She said: “You wouldn’t recognise me at home.

“There’s no big hair or false eyelashes when I’m out with the animals. No heels or fancy clothes. There I am in my wellies and, to be honest, I’m feral. I love it!”

Jodie lives in the countryside near Preston and commutes to the studios each day to film Corrie and that is just how she likes it.

She said: “My fella, Simon, like me being at home and so do my animals.

“My passion is looking after rescued animals. To be honest, I prefer animals to people! If I didn’t do what I do, I’d devote my life to rescuing animals.”

It is not a run-of-the-mill pets that Jodie has either as her collection includes “three rescue cows, three rescue ducks, three cats and three dogs.”

Jodie continued: “I also have about 17 rescue chickens including my cockerel, Harry.

“My poor Harry… he’s not very well at the moment and he just loves having me home every day. I think I’m going to have to get him a little chicken wheelchair if there is such a thing!”

Jodie doesn’t want to stop there as she said her door is open for more: “I’d love more animals so if anyone knows of a one-eyed goat or three-legged-pig, I’m just putting that out there…”
