Phillip Baker Hall appears on the red carpet in 2017

Seinfeld and Modern Family star Philip Baker Hall has died, aged 90.

The news was announced by Los Angeles Times sports writer Sam Farmer, who was his friend and neighbour, on Monday.

Sam wrote in a tweet: “My neighbor, friend, and one of the wisest, most talented and kindest people I’ve ever met, Philip Baker Hall, died peacefully last night. He was surrounded by loved ones. The world has an empty space in it.”

A cause of death has not been given as yet but Philip was known to have suffered from emphysema.

This is partly due to him having pneumonia when he was a child.

The condition meant that towards the end of his career, Philip could only film a few minutes at a time.

As the news of his death broke on Monday, tributes to the Hollywood veteran poured in across social media.

“Philip Baker Hall: Simply one of the greats,” one fan took to Twitter to share, with another adding: “Philip Baker Hall should have won an Emmy for playing Lt. Joe Bookman, library cop. RIP.”

A third read: “Rest in peace, Philip Baker Hall. The man did so much great work, but I’ll always love him as Mr. Bookman, the Library Cop from SEINFELD.”

Many loved the actor’s two appearances on Seinfeld

The late actor’s appearance on Seinfeld – where he played a detective on the hunt for a long-overdue library book – is often praised as being best guest star cameo throughout the show’s entire series.

Philip’s successful career began when he landed his first television role on an episode of Good Times – going on to make cameos on other series like M*A*S*H and Man from Atlantis.

From 1977 until the time of his death, the late actor racked up over 200 guest appearances on various TV shows.

Philip was no stranger to the big screen either – with films like Boogie Nights, The Truman Show, The Talented Mr. Ripley, and The Insider all appearing on his CV.
