Love Island’s Dr Alex George announces he is leaving A&E job to train to be a GP

Love Island star Dr Alex George has been fighting the Covid-19 pandemic on the frontline but is now looking to leave his A&E role to train as a GP

Dr Alex George has announced he will be leaving his role in A&E to train as a GP.

The former Love Island star, 30, took to his Instagram account to share some major career news with his 1.5million followers.

Posting on Instagram, Alex shared an image of himself in his scrubs and face mask in a hospital Accident & Emergency.

He captioned the image: “CAREER UPDATE: I am leaving A&E! I have had the most incredible five years in the Emergency Department but it’s nearly time for me to move on.

“It won’t be easy but next summer I will be starting a fresh chapter.

“I am embarking on a new career within the medical field and am excited to have you all on this journey with me.”

Taking to his YouTube account, Alex explained his career decision in more detail.

In the video, Alex explained that a chief reason for his new role was “flexibility”.

He noted: “I have loved working in Lewisham A&E for the last 5 years and learnt so much.

“However at some point we all have to move on and I am excited to start a new chapter.

“I am keen to hear what you all think of my decision? Thank you for all of your support!”

He hopes his new role will enable him to continue to work on his The Waiting Room podcast and continue to post videos too.

Alex first achieved his medical degree in 2015, going on to work in King College Hospital, before finally moving on to Lewisham Hospital, which he is now moving on from.

The doctor rose to fame on the 2018 series of Love Island where he was often unlucky in love.

He found further popularity as one of the many NHS workers fighting the coronavirus pandemic on the front line.

It has been a difficult year for the star after he lost his beloved brother Llŷr, who took his own life at the age of 20 following a mental health struggle.
