Veteran actor Christopher Biggins reckons it was a blessing his showbiz pal Cilla Black died suddenly as she would have been a “terrible patient”.
Saturday marks the fifth anniversary of her death aged 72 from a stroke following a fall at her holiday home in Spain
Biggins, now 71, became close to Cilla when he worked with her on the hit TV series Surprise Surprise.
In an interview with former telly co-hosts Anne Diamond and Nick Owen, Biggins spoke of his shock at news of her passing.
He said: “Someone rang me in the car to say she’d died, and I pulled over and I just sobbed and sobbed and sobbed, because I couldn’t believe it.
“It was not possible that she had died.
“Now looking back on it, I think that it was the best way because she would’ve been a terrible patient.
“She would have hated it not being well, so in a way….she was in her house in Spain, she was with her eldest son, she was on a balcony sunbathing.
“She’d obviously gone either to go for a wee or to get another glass of champagne, and she unfortunately fell, and she just went like that.
“So it was quick. She had a few things wrong with her and I think it would’ve been awful for her to have suffered.
