Demi Moore and Bruce Willis loved hard and fast, marrying and falling pregnant within just four months of meeting at a film premiere in 1987.
After leaving Los Angeles to set up home on a ranch in Idaho, the couple welcomed daughters Rumer, 32, Scout, 29, and 26-year-old Tallulah, but divorced in 1998 with Demi explaining they’d drifted apart.
“I think both of us from the outset were more passionate about having kids than we were about being married,” Demi – who turns 58 today – wrote in her 2019 autobiography, Inside Out.
Bruce, 65, happily trundled off to sow his wild oats again, declaring, “The bachelor thing is terrific.”
“I love women,” he told the Daily Mail. “You know how guys look at women and go, ‘Ooh, wow!’ I’m still that guy.”
And the split oddly ended up making the Lethal Weapon star and his ex-wife tighter, with Bruce revealing that despite no longer being man and wife, they were determined to raise their daughters as one family.
“I still love Demi. We’re very close. We have three children whom we will continue to raise together, and we’re probably as close now as we ever were,” he told Rolling Stone in 2000.
“We realise we have a lifelong commitment to our kids. Our friendship continues. The institution has been set aside… It’s difficult to live your life and marriage under a magnifying glass, which is what happens to movie star couples.”
They certainly stayed true to their word, cheering Rumer on side-by-side when she competed on Dancing With the Stars. And Demi was even a surprise guest at Bruce’s Comedy Central Roast in 2014.
She and ex-husband Ashton Kutcher were famously close to him and when the Covid-19 pandemic hit earlier this year, the former couple chose to lockdown with their kids in Idaho while Bruce’s wife Emma Heming Willis stayed behind with their daughters Evelyn and Mabel in Los Angeles.
“It’s generated a lot of interest because everyone can understand resentment and envy in the breakup of a marriage, but they don’t understand how I can get along with my ex like that,” Bruce once told W magazine of their bond.
“Demi and I made a choice to put the kids first, and we’re really lucky that it turns out we all have fun together.”
During quarantine, the pair put on an extremely friendly display in a series of social media shots – enjoying dance-offs, wearing matching family pyjamas and celebrating Father’s Day together.
And after their antics raised eyebrows, their daughter Scout shared the real story behind their cosy lockdown.
She revealed that Emma had actually stayed behind in LA awaiting test results for her daughter.
“It’s so funny you know because to me they’re just like super f**king weird parents, but to everyone else there’s this like different level,” Scout told the Dopey podcast of her mum and dad’s unusual set-up.
“My stepmum had to be in LA waiting for the results after taking her to the doctor.
“My dad came up here early and then travel got crazy so my stepmum stayed in LA with my little sisters.”
Emma eventually joined the clan for the rest of lockdown and there’s certainly no bad blood between her and Demi – far from it.
When Bruce and Emma renewed their wedding vows in March 2019, it was Demi who was top of the invite list, with Emma admitting there was no way they would ‘do it without’ her there.
“She welcomed me into her family like I welcomed her into ours,” she told Us Weekly.
