The leader of a dominant San Diego State team his senior season, a team that had Final Four potential before the tournament was shut down, Flynn stands out in a guard-heavy draft for that veteran leadership.
As a senior, Flynn was a clutch shooter, the leading scorer on the team at nearly 18 points a game. He also led the team with 5.1 assists per game and only 1.8 turnovers. He shot 37.3 percent from the 3-point line his senior season and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Flynn played one season for San Diego State after transferring from Washington State, where he also filled it up. The Tacoma, Wash., native wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school but over three full seasons in college proved he can score the ball and particularly be a 3-point threat.
ANALYSIS
Flynn’s college experience and improvement each season makes him an NBA-ready guard, albeit not a high draft pick.
Off the dribble he exhibits excellent control and patience, seeing what the defense gives him and making good decisions. If he takes the ball to the basket, his wider frame holds up at the rim. He’s also an exceptional shooter off the dribble and with NBA range off the bounce. While small at 6-feet-1, Flynn brings experience playing for a defensive-oriented San Diego State team that finished 10th in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency, according to Kenpom.com. Experience can be frowned upon in the draft, and the Mountain West Conference may not get the coverage, but Flynn has NBA-ready talent.
