Dallas Buyers Club Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey has opened up about the horrific treatment he and his mother had to endure at the hands of his abusive father

Matthew McConaughey has shared the horrifying abuse that he and his mother had to endure at the hands of his late father.

The actor, who won an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, says his abusive father even broke his mum’s finger four different times during violent rows.

He describes the relationship between his mum Kay and dad James (Jim), who died in 1992 aged 63 before Matthew was famous, as toxic and says they communicated through rage.

The couple split a number of times and even married each other three times and divorced twice.

Matthew, 50, shares the heartbreaking story in his new memoir Greenlights, printing a picture of his mum’s bent middle finger as proof of what happened.

The actor, who says he received his first beating for answering to ‘Matt’, recalls one vicious row between Kay and gas supply fitter Jim, which was sparked by him asking for more potatoes on his dinner.

In an extract published by Daily Mail, Matthew penned: “‘Sure you want more potatoes, FAR MAN?’ she barked. That was it. BOOM! Dad flipped the dining table into the ceiling, got up and began to stalk Mom.”

The Wolf of Wall Street star said he and his adoptive brother Patrick “knew the deal” and watched as their mother ran to the telephone to try and contact the police.

She hit Matthew’s “six foot four, 265 pound” father in the face with the receiver when he closed in on her and they “circled each other”.

Kay grabbed hold of a 12-inch chef’s knife in a bid to keep the blood-soaked Jim at bay while he threatened to hit her with a glass Heinz Ketchup bottle.

But they suddenly stopped brandishing their weapons at each other and dropped to the kitchen floor to “make love”.

Mathew wrote: “This is how my parents communicated. This is why my mom and dad were married three times and divorced twice – to each other.

“This is why my dad broke mom’s middle finger to get it out of his face four separate times. This is how my mom and dad loved each other.”

In his book, Matthew also details the beatings he received from his father for a number of things, including walking out on a bill at Pizza Hut, saying ‘I can’t’ and telling his brother he hated him.

He said his mouth was also washed out with soap for using swear words.
