Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto who worked with David Bowie dies of leukemia

Japanese fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto died aged 76 after a battle with leukemia.

The fashion guru had A-list connections including David Bowie, Elton John and Stevie Wonder.

Fans will remember Bowie wore the flamboyant designs on stage as his alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

News of his death broke on Monday after the star died last week on Tuesday.

His close family gathered to commemorate the star for a funeral in recent days.

Earlier in the year, the designer went public with his acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis.

Kansai made his mark on the fashion spheres as his work was presented at Tokyo, New York and Paris fashion weeks from 1974 until 1992.

The A-list designer spoke about his experience of dressing Bowie as he hailed the star as “shockingly beautiful”.

Famously he designed a cape which had Japanese kanji characters on it for the musician.

He told The Cut in 2018: “I found David’s aesthetic and interest in transcending gender boundaries shockingly beautiful.”

His actress daughter Mirai Yamamoto paid tribute to her “electric and energetic” father on Instagram following the news of his death.

The actress revealed her father was surrounded by loved ones in his passing.

“He left this world peacefully, surrounded by loved ones,” she wrote on social media.

“In my eyes, my father was not only the electric and energetic soul that the world knew him as but someone who was also thoughtful, kind-hearted, and affectionate.”

His company Kansai Yamamoto Inc also released a statement to commemorate his memory.

The statement read: “As he fought his illness, he remained always positive, never lost his passion towards creation, and was strongly determined to recover and come back with fully-charged energy to see you again.
