Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley shrinks by 2ins as his spine ‘fuses and compresses’

The pop star stood a proud 6ft 4in tall – but he’s lost some of his former height due to his unusual hobby of stock-car racing

It really is True… Tony Hadley has shrunk by two inches.

The pop star stood a proud 6ft 4in tall when he had a 1980 smash with To Cut A Long Story Short.

But today the former Spandau Ballet frontman is just 6ft 2in – and blames shunts he’s suffered in his hobby of stock-car racing.

Tony said four of his vertebrae were “fusing and compressing together”.

He added: “I’ve done some stock car racing and got T-boned a few times – when they come at you from three angles – and basically it compresses your spine.

“I got compressed and now I’ve lost about an inch-and-a-half off my height. I started at 6ft 4in – and I’m about 6ft 2in now.”

Spandau’s best-known hit Gold, which got to No2 in 1981, contains the lines “Nothing left to make me feel small… Luck has left me standing so tall.”

Speaking on his Stars Cars Guitars podcast, the crooner said the shrinking feeling “didn’t bother” him.

Tony, who left the band in 2017, has raced cars in his spare time through most of his career. In the 2003 ITV game show Celebrities Under Pressure his challenge was to take part in a time trial in Essex.

Tony’s not the only shrinking celebrity. In 2013 wrestling movie star Hulk Hogan said he’d gone from 6ft 7in to 6ft 4in. He blamed it on wrestling moves, back surgeries and knee replacements.
