Kristen Stewart’s ‘cagey’ Robert Pattinson romance and betrayal that tore them apart
The Twilight actress was caught in a media storm when her affair with an older, married man became the talk of Hollywood – with even Donald Trump getting involved
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were at one stage Hollywood’s hottest It couple after falling for each other on the set of teen movie Twilight.
The usually guarded Kristen said there ‘was nothing she could do’ to resist Rob as their feelings grew beyond that of their characters Bella Swan and Edward Cullen.
When the secret affair was finally outed, the A-list couple sparked a global frenzy with fans clamouring to see what their union would like in the real world.
Bu their eager followers would do well to get a glimpse of the pair looking anything close to loved-up.
In a recent interview, Kristen spoke for the first time about the delicate nature of her feelings for Rob and how she battled to protect them from prying eyes.
“This was a period of time when I was sort of cagey,” she explained.
“We did everything we could not to be photographed doing things – things that would become not ours,” Kristen, now 30, recalled in this month’s In Style magazine.
From switching clothes and vehicles at the last minute to using body doubles to fool the paparazzi, Kristen and Rob went to desperate lengths to conceal their blossoming romance.
But in horrendous irony, it was photographs of Kristen getting intimate with another man that brought her relationship to its knees in front of the world in spectacular fashion.
At the peak of Twilight mania, Kristen was photographed in the arms of her married Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders.
The pair were seen snogging in Kristen’s car at various stop-offs around Los Angeles – with the incriminating pictures then splashed across magazine Us Weekly before making their way around the world.
The steamy images shattered Kristen’s shy and coy image and put an abrupt and humiliating end to her private relationship Robert, while leaving Twilight’s fan base seething at her betrayal.
As the world feverishly dissected the drama, the usually guarded actress took the bizarre step of issuing a grovelling apology to Rob via People magazine.
“I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected,” she said. “This momentary indiscretion has jeopardised the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry.”
But Kristen’s gushing message to Rob was not enough to silence chatter about her infedelity.
Will Ferrell publicly joked about the scandal on US chat show Conan, dubbing Kristen a ‘Trampire.’
While Donald Trump also got involved, advising Robert ‘not to take her back.’
“She cheated on him like a dog & will do it again — just watch. He can do much better!” said the now President of the Unite States.
While Kristen took the flack, Rob came out of the scandal in a new light.
He appeared ready to laugh off his heartbreak when the usually sullen actor jokingly tucked into a tub of Ben & Jerry’s at his next interview.
He also made quips about his mistake not to hire a publicist before the pictures came to light, admitting he’d been foolishly ‘too cheap’ not to.
Rupert’s wife took a very different approach to uncovering her partner’s cheating.
After the affair was exposed, Liberty Ross responded by tweeting the one word response: ‘wow’ .
She then followed this up on Instagram by sharing a picture of Disney’s Snow White with the caption: “Not so pretty or so pure after all” in a clear dig at Kristen.
Liberty then gave a Vanity Fair interview months later, saying: “It was really the worst, really the worst.”
While Rupert made a grovelling apology to Liberty and their children.
“I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family. My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together,” he said in a public statement.
Liberty filed for divorce a year later.
With her three year relationship with Rob in tatters, Kristen was also dumped from starring in the Snow White sequel.
After putting the episode behind her, Kristen came out as a queer some years later.
In her latest interview with In Style said admitted that she finally feels happy in her own skin and excelling in her new identity.
“I love the idea that anything I do with ease rubs off on somebody who is struggling. That sh*t’s dope!” she said.
