A Married At First Sight contestant has shared horrifying details of the night he fought off five machete wielding burglars who attacked his home in an early morning raid.

David Pugh was left bloodied and in need of medical attention when he bravely fought off the armed raiders at his luxury Midlands home in February 2018.

The 56-year-old had been woken up by the sound of the burglars at his home and managed to fight them off bare handed when they attacked his teenage son and their puppy.

Featuring on Married At First Sight following the attack, David explained that he was reminded of his ordeal when he gifted his new wife, Shareen, a “survival kit”.

He told BirminghamLive: “Shareen has been very blessed in that she’s never had any real disasters or calamities in her life. But that’s not true for me. Experiences have taught me to always be prepared for the worst.”

He went on to describe the night he found masked men bursting in to his home in Catherine-de-Barnes and how he fought them off using skills learned in Krav Maga self-defence classes.

David recalled: “I got woken up at three in the morning with the sound of broken glass and doors being kicked in.

“It became an out-and-out battle in my house for about ten minutes. My martial arts training just kicked in. I wasn’t being brave. I was very lucky – there were golf clubs, machetes, table legs flying.”

He went on: “Fundamentally that experience is now part of my background. If the absolute worst happens I want to always be ready.

“In that instance I installed lots of CCTV cameras and sensor lights to my house.

“I’ve reacted to things that have happened in my life in quite a positive way. I think making sure you are never caught off guard by any situation is a good thing.”

David’s gift to Shareen included a “CPR face shield” and a pen that can smash glass if you need to get out of a train or are trapped in a car”.

Sadly, David and Shareen’s marriage did not last after they were matched on the hit Channel 4 show – and they split after their honeymoon.

David shared graphic images of his injuries and his bloodstained home following the 2018 attack with the Mirror at the time.

He recalled at the time the masked men demanding he hand over money, while he was trying to reach his son’s room to protect him.

He said at the time: “I was desperately trying to get to my son’s room. but I had so many splits to my head, I was drenched in blood.

“We could only assume they saw that, realised we hadn’t got any money and thought, ‘we have gone too far’, and got out of here.
