Love Island stars and crew have rallied around Dr Alex George after he revealed he had lost his younger brother to mental health
Dr Alex George has been supported by the Love Island family after announcing the tragic news that his teenager brother has died.
The reality star and NHS doctor said he was ‘hurting so bad’ as Llŷr, who was weeks away from taking up a place at medical school, lost his battle with mental health.
Shortly after Dr Alex posted his heartfelt message, he was inundated with messages of condolence from sympathetic followers.
Among those reaching out, were many of Dr Alex’s Love Island co-stars from his 2018 season and beyond.
Series winner Dani Dyer wrote: “So so sorry alex♥️ sending you so much love xx”
While Megan Barton Hanson, who has been open about her mental health struggles in the past, added: “Alex I’m so sorry for yours and your families loss. I can’t put into words how heartbreaking this news is. I’m always here if you need me. Sending love ❤️❤️❤️❤.”
Alex’s friends from the series Wes Nelson and Josh Denzel also told Alex they were there for him.
While Alexandra Cane, who was briefly linked to the doctor during their time together on the ITV2 dating show, added: “I’m so sorry Alex. My deepest condolences are with you and your family.”
A spokesperson for ITV wrote in the comments: “So sorry for your loss, Alex. Sending love to you and your family x”
Love Island has sparked many discussions on the subject of mental health in recent years following the suicides of former contestants Sophie Gradon, 32, Mike Thalassitis, 26, and host Caroline Flack, 40.
On Friday night, Dr Alex took to Instagram to share: “I have lost my beautiful little brother to mental health.”
In a statement he told his followers: “I can’t believe I am actually writing this post. I have lost my beautiful little brother to mental health. I love you so much Llŷr. The kindest and most caring soul. I was so proud of you starting medical school next month, you would have been the most incredible doctor. We are hurting so bad. No words can explain. As a family we are devastated. We love you and miss you so much. Please rest in peace x Our boy ♥”️
It’s believed that Alex’s brother would have been 19 at the time of his death.
Llŷr was due to follow in Alex’s footsteps after taking a place at medical school.
Alex has studied at the university of Exeter before winning a place on the 2019 series of Love Island.
The doctor returned to his duties after competing on the show and was vocal on his experience on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.
Last month, Alex revealed that after he made the decision to isolate away from girlfriend Amelia Bath during the health crisis, the pair had split.
He announced: “Guys just want to let you know, Amelia and I have decided to go our separate ways.
“As you know, we’ve been apart for most of lockdown which has been hard on us both and we both agree this is for the best.
“We will remain good friends and I have nothing but respect for Amelia. Thank you for the love and support always.”
