Actor Danny Dyer has released a moving statement about men’s mental health, urging them to ‘open up and talk’ about the issue.

And the EastEnders actor has even advised that they “talk to trees if they have to.”

Ahead of the launch of his agony aunt podcast with daughter Dani, Danny broached the topic of men’s mental wellbeing and said there’s a “gender thing” that prevents men from talking.

He stressed the topic’s particular importance during the “mad times” of the Covid pandemic.

“There’s still that gender thing where men don’t feel natural opening up, talking, and it is something that is so important,” he told PA news agency.

“This mental health thing what’s going on as well at the moment, the pandemic really is just a sideshow to what’s going on really with people’s f***ing brains and the anxiety.

“It is tough and you have got to talk about stuff, you have got to get it out there.

“Even if you talk to a f***ing tree, talk to something.”

He added: “It’s dark days isn’t it, it is dark for all of us and I think it is affecting people’s lives to another level, emotionally and financially.”

Danny also said he and his family faced the fear of death during the early days of the nationwide lockdown.

“I thought I was going to die, I thought my wife was going to die, my wife’s diabetic,” he shared.

“I thought my kids were going to die. We all had that fear.

“That is the vibe that is going on and that definitely comes through with some of the questions and dilemmas that are coming our way.”

Spotify Original podcast Sorted With The Dyers launches today (Wednesday 14th October) and will see the father-daughter team talk through listeners’ problems.

Dani joined her famous dad in the limelight after winning Love Island in 2018, and is currently pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Sammy Kimmence.

As well as 24-year-old Dani, Danny and his wife Joanne also have Sunnie, 13, and Arty, six.
