The Egregious Size Of Modern Warfare Is Finally Being Handled In Upcoming Patch

It all comes down to if you’re a glass-half-full or half-empty type of individual, but for PC players that don’t have unlimited space on their drives, a fix is finally incoming for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players.

Infinity Ward stated that, later today (October 13), a patch will be arriving that allows Modern Warfare players to uninstall various aspects and game modes of the title that they don’t interact with regularly, which should drop the egregious size of the title that has reached well past 200 GB into something that’s a bit more manageable.

Rumors have begun circulating that various language audio files, that hold a sizeable chunk of space on multiple titles, will also be able to be removed from the title to ensure that players can actively manage Modern Warfare from Infinity Ward. To state that it’s become a bit of an embarrassment stemming from the community towards IW is fair.

The announcement has been celebrated by PC users yet has frustrated many console owners, as some state that space is at an absolute premium on consoles where they can’t simply add a few TB of space on a whim.

Some PlayStation 4 owners got excited when their PlayStation downloaded a patch yesterday; that was a preload for 1.28 and does not include any means of customizing what is, and is not, installed with the title.

Others have requested that if players only want the campaign version for Infinity Ward to remove the always-online requirement; this has not been responded to by any developers nor IW themselves, and is extremely unlikely as it’s used for a type of security.

This does show that Infinity Ward and Activision, in spite of common theory and allegations, are actually tracking the issues that many are currently having with the popular title as long as people complain long enough.

The update is scheduled to hit the PC later today, and the feature is hoped to be matched in the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War that is finishing development and scheduled for release on November 13, 2020.

Regardless of how well this patch does at mitigating the exponential increase of data that some have pointed to as showing some form of disfunction within the developmental studios, it’s a bit of a mystery how the only way IW can save space is to uninstall entire game modes from the title, instead of cleaning up unused and depreciated assets, or weighing the player impact a singular asset has versus its size.

It’s unlikely the community will ever get into IW studios to determine where the bloat is coming from; here’s hoping the upcoming patch isn’t 60 GB to remove 10 GB of space.
